The Executive Director (ED) will lead Bike Maryland to be an influential, state-level organization to expand bicyclist education, improve rider safety laws and enforcement, advocate for increased bike infrastructure projects and funding, and build effective partnerships with agencies, bicycle advocacy groups, advisory councils, clubs, institutions, businesses, and riders.
The ED will report to the Board of Directors and will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Bike Maryland’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission.
H/she will recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals, and ensure programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, consistent quality of administration and finance, and effective communications.
Leadership and Administration
Lead, coach, develop, and retain volunteers to ensure effective and efficient operations and outcomes.
Manage the day to day finances of Bike Maryland, ensure consistent quality of financial records, provide monthly financial reports and analysis to the Board of Directors, and prepare an annual budget.
Assist in fundraising opportunities such as membership drives, donor cultivation, and bike event support.
Develop processes for the application and writing of grants. Must have knowledge of grant opportunities, associated regulations and policies, and grant program management.
Guide and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand. Publish a monthly newsletter.
Ensure effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate program components, and effectively communicate the results to the board, financial contributors, and other constituents
Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors: serve as ex-officio member of the board, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction
Provide oversight for the advocacy priorities and activities for legislation, policies, and funding in the interest of bicycle safety and improved bicycle infrastructure at the state and local levels.
Ensure regular and effective communication between bike advocacy organizations and clubs across the state with Bike Maryland to assist in creating a unified voice for bicycling in the state and region.
Foster an appropriate level of participation at bicycle commissions which may include membership, testimony, or other representation.
Organize and execute an annual Maryland Bicycle Symposium
Build strong relationships and partnerships with businesses and institutions across the state to support Bike Maryland’s mission of education and advocacy.
The Executive Director will be supported by a Board of Directors who will have shared responsibilities for fundraising, recruiting members, organizing fundraising events, managing merchandising, and soliciting donors and business partnerships to financially support the organization.
The ED will be thoroughly committed to Bike Maryland’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership and relationship management experience. Other qualifications include:
An advanced degree, with at least 10 years of senior non-profit management experience. A track record of effectively leading an outcomes-based organization and staff. Ability to point to specific examples of having developed and implemented strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
Excellence in organizational management with the ability to set and achieve strategic objectives, coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, and manage a budget
Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation
Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
Proficiency with email, Microsoft Office, social media required. Experience with WordPress, HTML, and CiviCRM preferred.
